Burlington Stores Celebrates 9th Year Empowering Students

Since 2017, Burlington has partnered with AdoptAClassroom.org® to support students in high-needs schools through their annual in-store back-to-school fundraising campaign. Our award-winning partnership has provided school supplies to more than 1.4 million students nationwide, and this year, Burlington is continuing its deep commitment to building brighter futures.

Donations of any size make a difference for a child in need of school supplies. Over the past eight years, Burlington’s generous customers have donated more than $13.8 million to AdoptAClassroom.org, enriching student learning at 7,100+ schools.

How Donations Help Students Thrive

Jesse is a middle school teacher in one of the 60,000+ classrooms adopted by Burlington since 2017. Working in a high-needs school, about half of Jesse’s students come to school without the supplies they need to learn.

When kids lack essential classroom supplies, it affects more than their learning – it can lower self-esteem and make them hesitant to connect with classmates.

"It's hard for me to sit there and watch students not have access to the materials that they need. If I'm able to, I spend my own money – that way, they can access these materials and have the best chance of success in school." –Jesse

Thanks to Burlington’s generous support, Jesse and his co-teacher have been able to do far more than just provide every student with their own school supplies.

Comfortable, flexible seating transformed part of their classroom into an uplifting reading space, filled with diverse books. It’s a popular setting for the students’ book clubs, where they learn literary genres and life skills like navigating relationships.

First-grade teacher Anjanette’s goal was to get her students out of their chairs and learning through hands-on activities. However, with a larger class than in prior years, it was hard to make supplies last, let alone invest in new materials.

This story is playing out in classrooms across the country. Ninety-seven percent of teachers say their classroom budget is not enough to meet their students’ needs.

The average teacher spends $895 of their own money annually to make up for their lacking budget. Anjanette estimates that she spends around $800 each year to support her students.

Burlington’s support keeps students supplied without draining teachers’ personal budgets. Anjanette used Burlington’s donation to purchase educational manipulatives and other items that help kids engage with content in new ways.

A student favorite is the oversized dice that they can use to practice math concepts. The impact of the new supplies was clear right away.

"When students are excited and happy, they make connections better. It just increases their level of engagement. I see students light up with the things we purchased with Burlington's donation." –Anjanette
