Want to Help Classrooms? Set Up a Fundraiser Like Yiran

Hi, I’m Yiran and in 2018 I helped AdoptAClassroom.org raise funds for classrooms in need. I donated my own money also, but I was able to make an even bigger impact by asking my community to support me.

As part of my fundraiser I thru-hiked the Pacific Crest Trail. You can follow my journey here.

However, you do not need to take on a 2,650 mile journey to help students. You can just start your own fundraiser with AdoptAClassroom.org. I found it to be really easy!

Here’s how:

#1 – Set up a personalized fundraising page or email AdoptAClassroom.org staff at [email protected] and they can set it up for you.

First, you’ll need to pick the campaign that means the most to you. You can currently pick from:

  • Where it’s needed most – Supporting AdoptAClassroom.org and everything they do to support teachers
  • STEM Fund – Giving classroom grants to educators who emphasize science, technology, engineering and math
  • Arts Fund – Giving classroom grants to educators who work in the arts
  • Inclusive Classroom Fund – Giving classroom grants to educators who challenge social inequity in the classroom
  • Disaster Relief – This standing fund provides immediate relief to classrooms impacted by natural disasters.

On each page, you can choose “Become a Fundraiser” to create your page. Your Fundraiser page allows you to set a goal and tell your story right on the donation page about why you are supporting AdoptAClassroom.org’s campaign. You can also see who donates through your page and post thank you messages to your donors right there.

Here’s my story: My high school math teacher instilled a love of math that allowed me to pursue a career in engineering. I still use the fundamentals he taught me to this day. For me, early childhood education is the most important way for a child to experience a full range of opportunities in life. AdoptAClassroom.org does a fantastic job of helping our teachers who have to spend $740 on average per year out of their own pockets. They help teachers purchase the supplies they need to give those children the education they deserve. Please help me support teachers with them.

#2 – Ask. Do you know that when an individual asks for a donation, 1 in 4 people will give?  The easiest way to fundraise is to call, text, or email those people you think will give and ask them directly.

Asking can be a little nerve-wracking at first! But remember, it’s for a good cause. Their donation is going to help students who really need it.

#3 – Post on social media. Social media can be an indirect way to fundraise, but it’s a great way to reach everyone you know to let them know about your passion to help teachers. Here are a few suggestions for your post:

    1. Start with your story.
    2. Explain what AdoptAClassroom.org does.
    3. Consider posting a personal photo or a video, too.
    4. You can also reshare AdoptAClassroom.org’s posts. Be sure to follow them on Facebook and add your own fundraising link before you share.

I chose to make my fundraising page not just to celebrate my dream to complete the Pacific Crest Trail, but also to make a difference with a great cause. In doing so, I was able to connect with my friends, family and coworkers – my entire community. I was overwhelmed by the response. Not only have they been incredibly supportive of my hike, but they’ve been supportive of the cause as well. I’m proud to say we raised thousands of dollars for AdoptAClassroom.org to help our teachers purchase classroom supplies.

If you’re starting your own fundraiser, definitely reach out to those close to you and help them understand why you’re so passionate about this cause. I think people want to hear about that. People want to be inspired. People want to help give back to the profession that helped get them where they are.
