I teach a wonderful and diverse selection of sixth graders who live in the heart of Albuquerques South Valley. Our school is a 100% free lunch school. That means the majority of our students experience the daily realities of poverty. When a teacher requires a $1.00 composition book, many students and their parents cannot afford to buy one, at least not until the next paycheck. My students are primarily Hispanic, but I have several Native American students, African-American students and white students as well. They are lively, curious about the world, on the verge of young adulthood/teenagerhood. Some live with grandparents or older siblings due to the passing of their parents. Some have a parent in prison or working in another state or country. Some are mastering English and speak only Spanish at home.
