My students need to increase their reading skills. About 60% of our students are English Language Learners - English is not their native language. Some have parents who are not literate in any language. Many are not able to visit local libraries for books. We also have a high free/reduced lunch rate (85%) which indicates that families do not have the financial ability to buy reading materials for their homes. My students` greatest need is for books that will allow them to extend their learning outside school hours.

I teach K-8 general music, girls and boys choir, guitar ensemble and drum ensemble. I am a certified level 3 Orff-Schulwerk teacher, a method that uses singing, speaking, playing instruments, and movement to teach musical and community building concepts. I could use additional funds to purchase enough instruments that my students would not need to share instruments with two other people. I could use funds to purchase real drums; currently we are doing West African and Caribbean style drumming on plastic water bottles. I could use funds to purchase enough electronic keyboards to teach a keyboarding unit. I could use funds to purchase storage cabinets for the instruments. I could use funds to purchase guitar amps for our guitar ensemble, and a couple more electric guitars. I would also like to purchase drumsticks so I can teach a unit on set drumming.

The students I work with in the Response to Intervention program are mainly second language learners from an urban setting Our school is roughly 85% free and reduced lunch. Students do not come to school equipped to start literacy programs at their appropriate grade levels. There is much catching up to be done in the area of pre-reading skills. Our RTI (Response to Intervention program) allows students to receive additional small group instruction on a daily basis (25 minutes). Our program has been in existence for three years with very little funding. Additional funds would allow us to purchase more skill building materials for students at all levels. We work with K-grade 6. Presently we use a collection of many different curriculums. It would be advantageous to have funds to purchase specific learning materials that would benefit our students. The Fountas and Pinnell Intervention kit would be a starting point. We have very dedicated staff who have made a lot of progress with our students in the past three years. Our older students, who did not receive intervention as early learners are still lagging behind. Intervention material at their grade level would be helpful. Thank you very much for your consideration. Our school has made great strides, and our students are very willing workers. I believe additional intervention material would make a difference.

We are a Title-I school that serves a mostly low-income community. As a 4th grade classroom with predominately English Language Learners (student for whom English is not their primary language), reading is one of the highest priorities. I am trying to build a classroom library that not only includes a wide variety of levels and interests, but also one that reflects the demographics of our classroom. Additionally, to ensure that every student feels successful and empowered in their reading abilities, we need sets of leveled reading books so that all the students in my classroom can grasp the 4th grade standards. To help make sure that my students are proud of the library, I am also looking to buy more Lakeshore book organizers to keep the library organized and teach my students to treat books like a treasure. In addition to the library, I am looking for funding to help create a classroom environment that is visually stimulating for the ELL students. In order to do this, I would like to purchase several pads of chart paper and poster markers to create posters that make the students feel welcome and ready to succeed. Please help the Fourth Grade Knowledge Explorers grow our brains!
