Dear Donator,
Each day my second grade students have a nutritious morning snack time. We are a Title I school, which means that many families are on free or reduced lunches. These parents do not have the monies to provide a daily snack. I cannot afford to continue to purchase healthy snacks throughout the school year. We know that a hungry child may not be as willing and able to learn. The snack must be a healthy snack and we discuss nutrition.
We read a variety of books throughout the year about foods of countries, the four food groups (part of our second grade curriculum) and cultures. My students often do not know guava, mango, olives, avocado, squash etc. It would be wonderful for my students to see, feel, and taste these foods. This would enrich their general knowledge and can give them the opportunity to choose new foods for their diet.
Teaching the life-skills of cooking is a great way to teach math, reading, and introduce new vocabulary and foods. These funds would be used to purchase cooking utensils and items to incorporate cooking into my curriculum.
Thank you for considering my request.
Sincerely,
Melanie Hinzman
