My students are mostly Pacific Islanders whose families live well below the poverty level.
We could use ANY type of classroom supplies from construction paper, to paper towels, to dissecting kits, you name it. Were not picky.
This would show my students that other people can adopt the Hawaiian value of Lokahi (giving). Thank you!

I teach Algebra and Geometry to sophomores in a very low economic area in Waianae, Hawaii. At least a third of the students I teach are free and reduced, minorities, and are suffering some sort of hardship. We have a high poverty and many of my students are homeless, living in shelters, or living on the beach. Im trying to teach these students how important education is for them. My students come to me with a lot of practical skills of survival, but little hope for something better than what theyre experiencing. They have little or no concept of balancing checkbooks, getting a good paying job, and budgetting. Ive set up my classroom like a job, where my students get paychecks every week. They get paid $1 a day to be on time and do their work. They get checkbooks to spend some of this money on supplies and other products (snacks and such). At the end of the term, we have tax season and they submit their transaction records. Their remaining pay becomes extra credit points that are added

There are lots of supplies needed before school starts so that I can prepare for my incoming students. Supplies are also needed throughout the school year to replace those that are in poor condition, lost, or damaged. I make posters, folders, name tags, organize teaching materials, make labels, and many more items for class use. All of these things help my students learn to become responsible and organized individuals. It surely helps to make their environment a conducive one for learning.
