Dear Friends, I teach in a underprivileged district, and I wish I had some type of smartboard for interactive learning. My kindergarten students are very inquisitive and have been exposed to so little in the world; they would really benefit from large, bright learning displays. For example, today is February 1st and the beginning of African-American History Month. I have some books, and a few posters, and can tell the stories of our country, but I wish I could add more faces and settings to the stories, and maps to demonstrate the journeys of our ancestors and our heroes. Today we read a biography of Barak Obama, and discussed his multicultural family background. We looked at the globe and maps, tracking him from Hawaii to Indonesia, to Massachusetts and Chicago(near us!), to Africa and to the White House. Tomorrow is Groundhog Day. We talked about weather, and the calendar. We looked at small pictures of groundhogs, and compared them to more familiar mammals...it goes on and on! I could talk about our classroom for hours, but I will stop here. Thank you for your time.

I teach in a low income district. School supplies are scarce for my students. They might start the year off with some supplies, but I usually buy quite a few supplies to keep the year going. Having money to provide students with the learning tools they need would be extremely helpful. My students have a variety of learning styles that I am not able to address with just textbooks and workbooks. I would love to be able to buy manipulatives to create a more hands on learning environment. I would also love to be able to provide uniforms to students who needed them.

I teach Second Grade and have quite a full classroom of 28 students.
26 out of 28 students qualify for free lunch and breakfast.
School supplies are rarely replenished throughout the year and I often spend my own money to make sure the students have enough pencils, paper, notebooks, markers, glue sticks, etc..
The teachers at my school rarely get any money to spend on their classrooms. The principal generally decides how the money is spent. This year it is being spent on classroom tables and chairs, as many in our rooms presently are over 40 years old!
I would love to have funds for supplies so that we could create our own books in class!
I would love to have funds to take my class on three field trips a year. The students rarely leave the community to experience what the city of Chicago has to offer! I would love to take them to a play, a museum, or even do some outdoor education! Presently, we only look for places that will take us for free so that we only have to pay for the bus. These kind of trips are difficult to find! Your generosity would certainly be appreciated.
