The preschool program in our small rural community was started over 30 years ago by two parents of special needs children. At a time when mainstreaming was not yet heard of, these parents wanted to develop a program where their young children could interact and learn alongside other children. The Sheridan County Child Development Center was one of the first inclusive preschool programs in the state. This community preschool program was supported by businesses, churches and individuals so that every child would have an opportunity to receive a quality early childhood experience regardless of their families economic situation. As the population in our farming community declined, it became harder for this program to make ends meet; our local elementary school was also feeling the effects of the rural exodus and as class sizes got smaller, a classroom opened up in our grade school building.
