My position as Title 1 Teacher is both enormously rewarding and incredibly challenging. My students are Tier 3 MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Support, Kansass approach to Response to Intervention) student covering grades K-5. Tier 3 students are those who are most at risk for academic failure. Planning and preparing lesson materials for such a broad span of ages is difficult, but even more so to plan for the range of individual performance levels within each grade. To manage this I must find ways to involve these students in targeted skills-based instruction that is differentiated to both ability and interest levels. Finding so many books and materials in a variety of formats to reach all the learning styles and strengths is difficult and costly. Our school has limited access to research based, individualized, comprehensive reading programs for the computer, but not the funds to pay for the site licenses or additional computers to run those programs.
