Rowlesburg School
I teach English, Reading, and Social Studies to students in grades 6, 7, and 8. My students attend a small rural school in a close-knit community that is very supportive of their education, but has high levels of poverty. Many of my students have never had a chance to travel very far from their own community. They are VERY curious about the world, and a donation would allow me to provide basic supplies, high interest reading materials, and enrichment materials in my classroom to help bring learning alive and connect their education to their lives. BASIC SUPPLIES: I would like to provide my students with binders, dividers, loose leaf paper, highlighters, and note cards so that I can teach them skills for organizing writing assignments and research projects. This will allow them to start good academic organization habits so that they can be successful with more complex subject material in high school. READING MATERIALS: One of my 8th graders pointed out that she would like to read more, but she has already read everything in the school library. My advanced readers wish for more modern literature and newer books in good condition. I also have many reluctant readers in my classes who wish for more reading materials that relate to their hobbies and interests (for instance, a classroom subscription to Outdoor Life, non-fiction books on mechanics and vehicles). NEWS SHOW, SPRING PLAY: One of the things that gets my students excited about reading and supports their reading comprehension is performing. I would like to help my middle school students put on a play for the elementary students in the school, as well as for parents. They could use scripts, basic AV equipment and simple props for their production, and they could also use the AV equipment to put on a regular student news show for other classes that will give them hands-on experience in working with technology and reporting facts. LAPTOP FOR SOCIAL STUDIES CONNECTIONS: finally, a donation could help upgrade our classroom laptop from an old, unreliable ThinkPad to a modern machine that I could use to share web resources and show clips of world cultures, current events, and citizens involved in the democratic process and improving their communities. This will help my students gain a sense of the relevance of social studies to their own lives, and would be better prepared to engage as active community citizens. THANK YOU FOR CONSIDERING A DONATION!
