I am a kindergarten teacher in rural Wisconsin. Currently, our school district has adopted the Common Core Learning Standards. Within these standards, kindergarten aged students are expected to become fluent beginning readers and writers. The goal is to provide each student a level of learning that meets their individual needs. Currently, I have a basic classroom library, with some leveled readers and some varied genres of literature. I have tried to create an inviting and positive learning environment within my classroom library. However, I am looking to help enhance my classroom reading library, so that it can become a more inviting learning area that provides my students with a vast amount of various literature genres as well as individualized reading material. In kindergarten, we are learning how literature can apply to our daily learning environments. We are also the foundation to fostering a joy and love for literature. It is vital to our age group, to provide our students with individual-based reading opportunities that support their level of learning. Within that individual-based reading, students should have opportunities to explore with various genres of literature.
I am seeking leveled readers of many genres for early childhood aged students to house within my classroom. In order to house and organize these items, I will also have to purchase some shelving units with separate compartments so for leveled readers that are inviting and appropriate for kindergarten students. Not only will this enhance individual reading opportunities within my classroom, it will provide my students with ample time exploring various genres and levels of reading...all while meeting the needs of each child while still in the classroom setting. Enhancing a classroom library and making it more accessible to our students will also foster social relationships based on the love of literature. It will also help improve student reading assessment scores, if more opportunities are provided for individual based reading experiences.
