My role is that of Literacy Instructional Leader in an urban high school. Many of our English classrooms consist of students with a wide range of reading abilities. One of the greatest challenges the teachers in this department face is providing students with the appropriate level of text to address the content expectations of the class without embarrassment. A classroom set(30)of e-readers for one or more of the 13 teachers in department would allow for different versions of the same text to be provided to students in a manner that respects the dignity of those who face reading challenges as well as those who are capable of reading college level text. Furthermore, the use of the current technologies embedded in these devices would assist all students in improving their comprehension and notetaking. A single classroom set would be shared by the teachers in the department based on the greatest need in the unit currently being taught. Multiple classroom sets would be greatly appreciated if a donor should have the means to provide them. Of course, donations for individual e-readers are also gratefully excepted.
