I work at an inner city school where the students come to school without basic knowledge, which hinders their reading abilities. Many of these students do not have books in their homes. Many of the parents speak another language and are unable to help their child read in English. By working in small groups giving the students the practice they need with certain sounds they are missing I am able to close that gap. However, the students need to be able to read books on their level and thus I am always buying leveled readers that are interesting so the students will be motivating. When my students read more, they become better readers and the world opens up to them.
