I have about 155 students every year from all sorts of different backgrounds. We are learning about American history and have the opportunity of using some technology in the classroom. I come from a computer programming background and would love to use more technology in the classroom to help give the students some access to different resources. If we could get 35 nook simple touches then I could load a ton of primary source documents on them. I could have the kids reading and discussing for themselves what someone was trying to convey from his or her text. Many of the documents that I want the students to read through are free from sites like http://www.gutenberg.org/. I believe it would be much more beneficial for the students to be able to use e-books for the material to read and analyse for themselves instead of me putting the material on a white board and only allowing them to get a short clip. I have also figure out how to put quick quiz material on the nooks to check for understanding without having to print 155 quiz sheets. I have also done this on the white board but then the students all need to follow my pace and speed for the quiz. If I had the nooks they could go at their own pace. I believe I would use the nook nearly everyday for instruction or reference.

I teach a self=contained fifth grade class in an old,old building. We have no windows and it is excessively hot and humid. We do have an air quality problem and we are trying to raise money for a ductless air conditioner. Today it was over 90 and my students were sick. We feel like a third world classroom. We would be willing to do a service of some sort for anyone who could help out. We believe in service for others. Thanks so much in advance.
