I teach on a block schedule that allows me to educate over 100 students per school year. In our county, the English texts are terribly outdated (13 years old) and are not aligned to our state or common core standards. The county is refusing to provide proper funding to the school system and has refused to purchase books and other reading materials for English classes in middle and high schools. I use mostly supplemental materials in the classroom; however, the out-of-pocket cost is expensive. Subscriptions to local newspapers and classroom sets of novels and nonfiction materials will help my classroom and our department function more efficiently.
