Gillian Candelaria

I am an English Teacher at Civic Leadership Academy, a small high school in Elmhurst, Queens. More than 75% of our students receive free lunch, and the majority of our students are English Language Learners. What makes our schools especially different is despite the language barrier, our students love the works of William Shakespeare. For the past two years our school has hosted our own Shakespeare Faire featuring our students' research, artwork, films, and performances inspired by Shakespeare's plays. In preparation for the faire, students and teachers create the stage, costumes, decorations, and props for the event. We also prepare students after-school outside our own school responsibilities. If chosen for a grant, I would use the funds to support our Shakespeare Faire for the 2012-2013 season.
