Meredith Farnsworth
1st Grade
Wash (john S.) Elementary
As a first grade teacher, one of my main goals is to teach my students to read. Not only do I want my students to read but to develop a love of reading. I strive to create an environment that allows this to happen. I have incorporated Reader's Workshop where students are reading books at their level and then journaling about specific strategies that we are learning. These can be text to text or self connections, story structure, or even their favorite part of a book. Great literature is a necessary and important aspect of teaching and helping to foster a students love of reading. Many students in my class come from diverse cultural backgrounds and life experiences. To many of my students English is a second language which can make their educational experience that much more complex. They also often times aren't afforded the luxury of having a home library full of great literature. It's because of this that I strive to make my classroom library one that can help promote a love of reading and give them the same opportunities other students have. I would greatly appreciate any help I can get to purchase more reading materials, this includes guided reading book sets and fiction and non fiction books that students can use to enrich their learning and bridge the achievement gap. Thank you so much for taking the time to learn about the wonderful things we are doing in first grade and helping me to create a literature rich environment.
