Hmong International Academy
Hmong International Academy is a Minneapolis school with a predominantly Hmong population. We are located in north Minneapolis and 90% of our students are on free and reduced lunches meaning it is a low income school. Many of the parents of my students have to work one or two jobs to make ends meet and there is not much time or money for my students to be in fitness or exercise programs after they leave the school setting. (traveling basketball, dance groups, swimming lessons, etc.) For this reason, many of my students are gaining weight and not as fit as possible. I would like to establish an exercise fitness CD library that would include CD's of various types that middle school students could check out for 2 weeks similar to a public library. I would like to have a variety such as areobic dance, hip hop dance, zumba, yoga, etc.
I believe that the students would enjoy these CD's as well as improve their fitness. The picture I have included is a group of students that I took to a cross country ski race. We were able to get some volunteer coaches to help us to ski and then we went to our first race!!! Some of these students are in middle school and some are in elementary.
