My 5th grade students attend an elementary school in East Oakland, California. About 95% of the students at the school qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch and over 70% of our students are English language learners. As a low-income school, there is definitely a need in my classroom for regular school supplies such as pencils, sharpeners, markers, and masking tape. However, your generous donation will also go towards funding special supplies like science lab materials, drawing paper, and digital cameras so students can expand their base of knowledge and skills. Our school is committed to teaching all of our students a rigorous standards-based curriculum. However, due to high population of ELL students, teachers have to come up with creative ways to supplement this curriculum. Hands-on extension and enrichment activities are essential in helping students gain a better understanding of the content. In addition, we lack the supplies to address the grade-level standards in the arts. This program will allow us to purchase the necessary art supplies in order to complete projects in this content area.
