For more than a dozen years, I have taught in a community of students from mostly low to some middle income families. Many of the students come from Spanish-speaking families, and some students’ parents speak only Spanish. Most of the families have either both parents working hard to make ends meet or dad hard at work while mom is hard at work at home raising many small children. I love this population! Like many teachers, I stay at school late into the evenings and come back on the weekends too. I tend to make teaching my top priority with mothering a close 2nd. Being a wife comes in 3rd, unfortunately, and taking care of myself comes in last. My husband teaches 7th grade social studies at our school, and our 3rd grade son goes to school here as well. We live in the community and love living a simple rural lifestyle. Normally, teachers at my school receive $150 yearly to purchase basic supplies, but at this point (late July) we have received no money. Like every year, basic supplies will run out (that I purchased) and supplemental materials will not be purchased. Funding from a donor would mean that I would have more money for my own family (spending less out-of-pocket money for supplies) and more supplemental materials for my students. My students would benefit greatly from the purchase of “extras” that some students and schools automatically get.
