I am a learning support teacher in an inner-city public school. My students range from 3rd to 5th grade, and have a myriad of abilities/disabilities. Providing as much differentiated and multi-modality instruction as possible is mandatory in meeting the needs of my students.
Technology has enabled me to level the playing field and make our rigorous curriculum more within the reach of my special needs students. Because my students don’t read on grade level, have difficulty comprehending at higher levels, and struggle to keep their focus and attention on what is being discussed, we have been taking advantage of any and all free trips. We then use technology to research and locate audio-visual materials to help us get a better understanding of what we saw, did, and learned. Next, we pull everything together by writing individual and group essays and “scripts”. These pieces are then used to create power points, movies, and podcasts! In fact, our first podcast is already online! The students have become very excited through this use of technology and remember more information than they had in the past.
We need DVD’s, CD’s, printer ink, photo and printing paper so that my students can have their own “hard copy” of our finished pieces to take home to share with their families. Also, a "lending library" of iPod Nanos would allow my students who do not have computers to take our work home to share as well. Help me make this possible and greatly lower my personal expenses!
