As one of three English classrooms in the 7th and 8th grade, my students constantly face conflicts in timing with other classes due to lack of materials.
Many of our whole-class novels are completely falling apart - whether it is torn covers, single pages missing or larger chunks of the entire text.
A portion of the selected titles we read are dated with some being out of print or very difficult to find. While the concepts within the text can be relevant to students' lives, newer, more timely texts may motivate students to be more engaged in the reading process.
Furthermore, we have only enough books to keep in the classroom, so all the reading must be completed during school hours, which makes our progress slow and cumbersome.
Considering the technological era in which we live, students must be exposed to a variety of literacy skills. To merely be able to read and write may not be enough for our students to be competitive in the larger economy when they enter the job market. By purchasing additional technology tools, our students will benefit from instruction that has the potential to greatly impact their future success.
Additional funding would help us acquire the materials we greatly need in order to keep our students progressing at an appropriate pace.
